Dr. Ivy Walz joined the voice faculty at Ithaca College School of Music in 2011. Here she teaches voice lessons, vocal pedagogy and an opera immersion class as part of the Honors Program. Previously held teaching positions include Cornell University, the State University of New York at Cortland, and as a graduate assistant at the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati.

For Ivy, teaching and performing have always gone hand in hand. As an experienced pedagogue, she believes in student learning centered teaching that is based in voice science and vitalized by integrative pedagogies, as well as her commitment to lifelong learning. Ivy believes in empowering students through guiding them to develop a healthy singing technique that spans across musical genre.

In voice lessons Ivy brings joyful dedication to working with each student individually. In the studio, students engage in processes for effective practice, proper care for the vocal instrument, and essential skills in the categories of articulation, resonance, breathing, healthy phonation, body awareness, and performance practice.

Ivy believes that diverse and inclusive learning environments are essential, and she is committed to creating and contributing to safe and welcoming spaces for all individuals. She is proud to serve on a collaborative faculty, and through her teaching leads students to discover connections between their vocal work and course work so that they may learn to synthesize across their chosen curriculum.

In her vocal pedagogy course, Basics of Vocal Mechanics, she teaches the anatomy and physiology of the vocal instrument. Through class lecture, hands-on activities and reflective assignments students develop a working map of the singing instrument.

Ivy is an active member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. She currently serves as Treasurer for the NATS Central New York Finger Lakes chapter. She is an engaged clinician who gives master classes on integrating healthy singing techniques with dynamic performance

Ivy holds the DMA from the College Conservatory of Music at University of Cincinnati and MM and BM from Ithaca College School of Music. Please visit Faculty Profile at Ithaca College School of Music for more information.
